The revival of knitting in the UK and elsewhere in Europe and around the world has also sparked a renewed interest in the role of knitting during both World Wars.
In World War I and again in World War II, women spent countless hours knitting socks and sweaters for their partners, friends and other men who were sent off to fight in the war.
Less known is the fact that there is also a large number of knitting songs that were written, published and performed at the time to support this civilisation contribution to the war.
Songs about knitting - from "A Stitch in Time" and "More Power to Your Knitting, Nell!"
Internationally acclaimed vocalist and opera singer Melanie Gall uncovered the lost treasure trove of knitting songs and has presented them to the public for the first time in a century in her beautiful performances "A Stitch in Time: A Knitting Cabaret" and "More Power to Your Knitting, Nell!" which she has been performing at various festivals around the world.
The first video shows Melanie performing "Sitting With Your Knitting" from "A Stitch in Time"
The second video is a preview of her acclaimed cabaret show "More Power to Your Knitting, Nell!"
